Other Related Disabilities and Special Needs
We define a related disability, as that which is closely related to intellectual disability or that requires a similar treatment plan as those with intellectual disabilities require. This condition is both severe and chronic. There are four conditions that must be met:
- The disability must be attributable to a condition such as epilepsy, cerebral palsy or any other condition — except mental illness — that causes the individual to have intellectual disabilities and impaired functioning.
- Disability is projected to continue indefinitely.
- Disability results in significant functional limitations of the individual in at least three of the following areas: learning, self-care, independent living, mobility, self-direction, use and understanding of language.
- Disability was onset before the individual turned 22 years of age.
