Other Related Disabilities and Special Needs

We define a related disability, as that which is closely related to intellectual disability or that requires a similar treatment plan as those with intellectual disabilities require. This condition is both severe and chronic. There are four conditions that must be met:

  1. The disability must be attributable to a condition such as epilepsy, cerebral palsy or any other condition — except mental illness — that causes the individual to have intellectual disabilities and impaired functioning.
  2. Disability is projected to continue indefinitely.
  3. Disability results in significant functional limitations of the individual in at least three of the following areas: learning, self-care, independent living, mobility, self-direction, use and understanding of language.
  4. Disability was onset before the individual turned 22 years of age.
